Making of Tanjore Painting:-

 

Stage I : Canvas preparation




A plywood based canvas is made with a layer of cloth pasted on it and the wet cloth is horizontally from centre to edge is placed with extra cloth on the other side. The canvas is then dried for couple of hours to make it ready for the artist to paint the sketch. Limestone chalk paste with the use of a (Arabic gum medium) is used to create the 3d effect and the theme is painted (i.e called Jesso work).

 

 

 

 

Stage II : Sculptural Stage




Real Tanjore gems of varied shades (Colors) are fixed in selected areas like pillars, arches, curtains, thrones, dresses, jewellery etc. The gold foil of 22ct is used to cover the embossed areas and then the canvas is allowed to dry for 24hrs .For more stunning (i.e Embossed) effect the process would be repeated as required.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Stage III : Decorating Stage




In Decorating Stage the appropriate colors are applied on the canvas to get the desired effect. The Usage of poster colors is mostly striking-it is a dark hue of red, blue or green.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Stage IV: Improvise Stage

Stage V : Final Stage






In this Stage paint the figures and background carefully with poster colors. The Usage of background colors is mostly striking-it is a dark hue of red, blue or green. Additional gems (i.e AD Stones which was called American Diamond Stones) are fixed in the later Stages if required. The quality of AD stones which we using is first class A1.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Stage VI : End Product

 

 

 

 

 

 


When canvas dries the painting is enclosed in fiber glass and framed using the desired frame pattern (i.e Chettinad Teak wood Frame, Mani Frame, Fiber frame with raw silk mount and Mandapam Frame etc).
